On Friday, June 1 Department of Revenue Services Deputy Commissioner Joseph Mooney quietly informed human resources he will retire from service, effective July 1, according to DRS spokesman James Carson.
While the announcement that DRS Commissioner Kevin Sullivan was leaving DRS for the private sector received much media attention and a press release from Gov. Dannel Malloy, no announcements or details regarding Mooney’s departure have yet been made by DRS or the governor’s office and few seemed aware of Mooney’s decision.
Mooney served as second in command at Connecticut’s tax agency and last year earned $151,463 in salary with an additional $38,588 in benefits. He briefly took the leadership role at DRS after Sullivan announced he was leaving state service in May.
Mooney’s decision to retire coincided with Malloy’s announcement that Department of Labor Commissioner Scott Jackson would take the leadership helm at Connecticut’s tax collecting agency.
A recent report on DRS employee allegations raised questions regarding employee morale and work conditions within the state office.
Carson offered no additional comments regarding Mooney’s departure and the governor’s office has not yet returned calls for comment or details.

Morale was so bad at DRS under Commissioner Sullivan and Deputy Commisioner Mooney; they had no pulse on what was happening within DRS.
Thank goodness for new leadership; out with the politicians and bring in logical forward thinking individuals.
