Connecticut drivers cannot afford another gas tax
In December 2020, Governor Ned Lamont signed Connecticut up for the Transportation & Climate Initiative (TCI), an agreement with Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Washington D.C. to deliberately increase the cost of gasoline and diesel fuel at every gas station within their borders.
Lamont estimates TCI’s backdoor taxes will cost Connecticut drivers about $1 billion over the next 10 years. And instead of funding our roads and bridges, like other gas taxes, TCI money will be spent elsewhere.
TCI was so extreme that even New York, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine refused to join.

I do not support the Transportation and Climate Initiative. Connecticut residents and business already pay some of the country’s highest taxes. Please do not impose TCI’s backdoor taxes on Connecticut drivers.

The funds generated – estimated by TCI to be upwards of $7 billion per year – would then be distributed to participating states to invest in electric cars, buses, bike paths and “climate justice” initiatives.
States like New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire are among the 12 states required for the TCI to go into full effect. Despite all five states outright rejecting the proposal, Gov. Lamont and Connecticut lawmakers seemingly plan to move forward.
